Congratulations on your admission to the Rutgers, Master of Business and Science Program!

As mentioned in your acceptance letter, all international students must take the MBS Language Assessment exam prior to starting the semester to determine whether placement may be necessary into a Reading and Writing course at PALS.

What is PALS?

PALS (Program in American Language Studies)  is designed for Master of Business and Science students to gain writing and reading skills necessary for graduate courses in their program. International students from the MBS program are offered reading and writing courses with the goal of developing their writing at the academic level with research components. The MBS program seeks to develop each students’ academic writing ability so they can develop into competitive candidates for the job market.

Purpose of the exam:

The purpose of this exam is to assess students' level of professional and academic writing and to compare this assessment with program outcomes and expectations for writing at the graduate level.  Your writing samples will help PALS place you into the appropriate writing classes if needed.

What to expect and how to “prepare”:

This is not an exam you can study for in the traditional sense. However, there are a few things you can do to help you prepare for the test day.

Students are expected to write professional correspondence to a superior either in an academic or business setting.

During the exam, students will also be writing an argumentative essay. Students will be provided with a reading and guiding questions. They will be expected to create an argument and support it while incorporating quotes from the reading.

Students should also think about their grammar and the vocabulary being used.

Any outside sources will not be permitted while taking the exam.
